Irlen Syndrome

Irlen Syndrome is a sensitivity to light that interferes with reading and writing based abilities that affects 10-12% of the general population. It is a genetically transmitted condition that causes distortions on the printed page and discomfort when the individual tries to read. Colored overlays on the page can eliminate or greatly reduce the distortions / discomfort that this syndrome creates and enables the individual to read more effectively and to benefit more from remediation for other learning disabilities. Irlen Syndrome is not detected in any testing for learning disabilities or vision acuity. Studies indicate that 50% of all poor readers will have Irlen Syndrome and about half of that group will have Irlen Syndrome and another learning disability. It affects all populations and all levels of intelligence.
