Report on the Incidence of Irlen Syndrome in a High Risk Youth Population and Possible Remedial Action: The Social Costs of Illiteracy are Tremendous: Studies in three state prisons, CA, CO and MI, found that approximately 65 to 75% of male prisoners, and 80% of females in MI have reading disabilities resulting from Irlen Syndrome. This is an inherited condition and it is estimated that 70% of the children of inmates will enter jail in the future if there is no intervention in their lives. Irlen Syndrome is one piece of the puzzle in their complex lives that can be helped easily and inexpensively and give them a sense of achievement.

A Massachusetts Pilot Project : Thirty 4th grade students with moderate to severe symptoms of Irlen Syndrome were administered the GORT before being screened to select the colored overlay(s) that greatly reduced or eliminated their symptoms. After three to three and one half months using their Irlen colored overlays both special education and non- special education students improved significantly in reading comprehension.

A Controlled Field Study of the Use of Coloured Overlays On Reading Achievement: J. Noble, M. Orton, S. Irlen, PhD, G. Robinson, PhD, Australian Journal of Learning Disabilities, Volume 9, No. 2, June 2004. This study investigates the effect of using Irlen coloured overlays on reading rate, accuracy, fluency and comprehension under regular class conditions. Subjects were 71 third graders in two elementary schools in Yakima, WA. Group 1 used their optimum coloured overlays for three months while Group 2 were delayed treatment for three months. Group 1 showed a significant average gain from 2.9 to 4.2 years in three months use of overlays. The delayed group made no change over the three month period of not using an overlay and showed a significant average gain from 2.8 to 5.0 years in the next three months when they did use their coloured overlay.
